One-to-one Product Photography Workshop for Candle Business
As a commercial photographer, one of the satisfying aspects of my job is helping small businesses thrive by improving their visual storytelling. Having run several photography workshops, including a business and product photography workshop, I planned to develop a more personalised approach tailored to individual businesses’ unique needs.
So, when the owner of XII Trials, an independent candle-making business, approached me for help with their product photography, it felt like perfect timing to bring this vision to life.
Why Create a 1-1 Product Photography Workshop
Small product-based businesses often face similar challenges:
- Struggling to capture consistently high-quality product images.
- Limited budgets that make hiring a professional photographer impractical for regular content needs.
- There is a need to improve visual marketing without adding hours of complexity to their workflow.
I designed this 1-1 workshop specifically for businesses like these. It’s hands-on, practical, and tailored to address individual goals. By the end of the session, participants gain the skills and confidence to create their own professional-quality product photos for digital marketing, social media, and sales platforms.
The Workshop in Action
The first session was in my small studio, set up to accommodate tabletop product photography—perfect for items like candles, ceramics, handmade jewellery, and other artisan goods.
For XII Trials, the focus was on:
- Building a Strategy: We discussed his target audience and how to identify imagery types that resonate with them.
- Mastering Photography Basics: I then covered essential photography concepts like lighting, composition, and camera settings in a way that was accessible and actionable with their equipment (not mine). We also explored cost-effective ways to enhance their photography processes. (There is no need to go out and buy a light tent, which is often the advice!)
- Hands-On Practice: Under my guidance, Jon practised setting up shots, solving challenges in real-time, and experimenting with techniques and lighting tailored to their candle products. He did all this with easily obtainable accessories, setups, and equipment he already owned.
- Enhancing Content: We also covered simple editing tools like Lightroom (a free mobile app) and Canva to create polished, brand-consistent images for his social media and website.
The session wasn’t just about theory—it was about building confidence and ensuring the business owner felt ready to tackle their own photography projects moving forward.
What my client said.
Why This Matters for Small Businesses
Professional-looking product photos can make all the difference in attracting customers and growing your business. For small, independent creators, having the skills to control their own photography can be empowering and a cost-effective way to improve their marketing.
This workshop isn’t about turning you into a professional photographer. It’s about giving you the tools and confidence to create consistent, high-quality images representing your brand in the best light.
