Children’s Private Tutor Brand Photography Case Study
Read about this brand photography session with a private tutor, who needed new images to update her website and branding.
Meet Rowena - My 121 Tutor
Before 2006, I was a full-time teacher in college and loved teaching, but I eventually realised that my forte and passion were working one-on-one with children.
I offer three main tutoring services: For the younger children, I provide preparation tutoring for the 11+ exams, then maths from year 7 to year 11, plus A-level Psychology for years 12 and 13.
What I love is that I can tailor the lessons to the child’s personality.
I teach using Zoom and face-to-face methods, but I work more locally in person, where possible, for younger children. Creating rapport over Zoom with a child between 9 and 10 years old is more challenging than when they’re teenagers because children interact differently as they age.
Why did you need images and video?
Images connect with people’s brains more quickly than words.
My service is quite personal. I’m working with children, and parents want to make sure that the person they choose is suitable for their child.
Good imagery can give an indication of the type of person I am. Parents can see how serious or funny I am and even know my age. And I think that’s quite important, as the images show me as a person. Secondly, parents can see the three different ages I work with rather than just a load of text.
I felt my previous website images didn’t really show my brand.
Why Graham Baker Photography?
I Knew of you through networking and heard about you from other people I know who said they used you as a photographer. I knew you were good, and I liked what you said when we spoke initially about creating a story.
I think it’s quite important that a photographer understands what the customer is trying to do and builds rapport – It’s the same with tutoring. I take time to get to know the child to reach the desired end goal.
I felt that you understood what I was trying to get across, and that was important to me.
You also suggested using Pinterest. So, while I had a picture in my mind, Pinterest helped me get my thoughts out so I could see exactly what I wanted for the images.
So why hire someone to do it? Why didn't you just create them yourself?
These days, people can see the difference between a professional photograph and a snap with a phone. While that can save a load of money, if people look at those images and think they look amateurish, they would judge you as cheap and cheerful, and I’d get tarred with that.
I know there are many tutors out there who are cheaper than me. I’m not straight out of college, and I’ve got a lot of experience, so I think that my website has to reflect the professional level and the type of clients who appreciate that level.
It’s fair to say that having those good images is essential as you’re showing people what to expect when they come to you at a professional level.
Brand Photography Session
I think the fact that we had a plan that fitted my brand was essential!
I was a little bit flustered at the beginning because I hadn’t done anything like that in my home before. But then I just went into what I normally do and settled down. And while it was a long process with the 3 children, it didn’t feel like it was!
I think it created much more authentic images, and I’m 100% happy.
How have you used your new Brand Images?
They’ve been uploaded to my new and updated website, used them on my Facebook page and have been using Canva and actually made a poster, which I really, really like and have put up locally.
What’s been the benefit of having high-quality professional images for your Private Tutor brand?
These images have the benefit of reestablishing my brand as a private tutor. And even though I’ve been tutoring for a long time, I have another brand that I’m also known for (“The Wine Lady”). So, the new images will help people identify me with the tutoring brand as opposed to the wine lady.
Any Final Words?
What you’ve done is very, very valuable.
You take the time to find out what your client’s brand is about. I can see that you get into your client’s mind. And understand that person’s type of business and what it is they’re trying to get across.
It’s important that you understand not only the ins and outs of that person’s business but you understand what it is and how much they actually want to be seen.
The images need to be congruent with the brand. So, you wouldn’t take a picture of me being a tutor in a wine bar, for example! The brand story needs to have context, and that is what you’re able to understand.
