The Liberty Torch - The Run of Hope
Its mission is to unite communities across America to raise funds and awareness for mental health support and suicide prevention. At the heart of the project is the Liberty Torch, a symbol of hope and resilience that will be carried throughout the project, connecting participants and spreading its positive message.
The Run of Hope is an inspiring global initiative created by author and motivational speaker Mark Llewhellin.
I was privileged to contribute to the project by providing professional photography of the torch and headshots for Mark, the founder and driving force behind Run of Hope.
The challenge was to do this custom-built piece justice in a photograph. With its intricate details and highly polished surface, I knew this would test the product photography tricks I have up my sleeve!
The first challenge?
Reflections!
Shiny objects like this liberty torch can be a nightmare. They reflect everything—lights, walls, and, if you’re not careful, me!
To minimise reflections, I used a combination of polarising filters, diffused lighting, and strategic positioning. It’s all about controlling the light and using techniques like flagging (blocking unwanted reflections with black cards). But let’s be honest, it also took patience!
Then there was the weight of the torch. This is no lightweight prop! The challenge was to make it look like it was standing effortlessly, almost floating above another reflective surface!
I’m not giving away all my secrets here! Let’s just say the Liberty Torch wasn’t balancing there by magic. The final image is a composite of several photos, carefully stitched together in Photoshop to remove any “evidence” of how it was supported.
Certainly challenging, but very rewarding!
